First, some definitions:
An intern is a clinician who has graduated and is now in the process of accumulating their necessary hours toward becoming fully licensed. For example, the MFT board requires a full 3000 hours to be accrued prior to becoming fully licensed.
Therefore, there are many gate-keeping requirements along the path to becoming a fully licensed clinician. Additionally, there is immense oversight to ensure the best well-being of the clients who are seen. While you might be seeing someone who is newer in the field, they have already had at least an entire year of academic work, and they have the benefit of review from supervisors at every step.
